Fear of embarrassment is one of the most powerful forces keeping capable adults out of the martial arts.
Nobody wants to look incompetent. Nobody wants to be the worst person in the room. And walking into a room of experienced martial artists as a complete beginner takes real courage.
But here’s something worth sitting with: every single person in that room was a beginner once. Including your instructor.
At Systema Colorado, beginners are genuinely welcomed — not tolerated. Looking awkward at the start isn’t a problem to be hidden. It’s how everyone begins.
Making mistakes is baked into the Systema method.
Systema exists in real-time, adaptive, never-the-same-twice territory. There’s no script to memorize, no perfect technique to execute. The whole point is to learn to respond fluidly to whatever’s in front of you — and you can’t get there without trying imperfect things, failing, adjusting, and trying again.
My teacher Vladimir taught me to laugh at my mistakes. Not to dismiss them, but to not let them stop you. The mistake shows you where to go next.
High-ranking black belts often have the hardest time beginning Systema, precisely because they’re uncomfortable looking less than expert. That self-protection instinct is understandable — and it’s also what keeps people stuck.
The willingness to look silly, to try something and have it not work, to be a genuine beginner — that’s actually a sign of intelligence and courage, not weakness.
If you’ve been holding back because you’re worried about how you’ll look: nobody here is judging you for being new. We’re just glad you showed up.
