Is Systema Fake? Is It Too Brutal?

Is Systema Fake? Is It Too Brutal? (Spoiler: Both Criticisms Can’t Be True at the Same Time)

Two of the most common reactions people have when they first see Systema on video are completely opposite — and they can’t both be right.

Reaction one: “That looks fake. Nobody would actually fall down like that.”

Reaction two: “That’s way too violent. I want something gentler.”

Here’s the thing: Systema can’t be fake AND so brutal it breaks skeptics’ worldviews when they come to test it. But both reactions happen constantly.

So which is it?

The “fake” criticism usually comes from the fluidity of it. Systema doesn’t look like what most people expect martial arts to look like. There’s no yelling, no rigid stances, no dramatically telegraphed techniques. The movements are quiet, efficient, and often devastating in ways that are hard to see coming.

The “brutal” criticism comes from a different clip set entirely — usually Systema striking footage.

Here’s what makes Systema genuinely unique: it runs the full spectrum. From soft, flowing, almost meditative movement all the way to some of the most effective striking you’ll encounter in any martial art. It isn’t one or the other. It’s both, and you learn to choose.

Nothing in Systema is choreographed.

A key difference from other arts: Systema demonstrations are never rehearsed. The attacker chooses the attack. The defender responds in real time. There is no choreography. What looks effortless is the result of deeply internalized skill — not a scripted performance.

The softness you see isn’t choreographed gentleness. It’s spontaneous fluidity developed through years of real, pressure-tested training.

If you’ve seen Systema and thought it looked fake, we invite you to come feel what a Systema class is actually like. Come curious. Come skeptical. We’re happy to show you.
