You Don’t Have to Be in Shape to Start Systema

(In Fact, Waiting Is the Worst Thing You Can Do)

Here’s something most martial arts schools won’t tell you: waiting until you’re “in shape” before you start training is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

At Systema Colorado in Longmont, we hear it all the time. “I want to get fit first, then come try a class.” It sounds reasonable. It’s actually backwards.

Training is what gets you in shape — not the other way around.

Systema is built for real human bodies at every fitness level. Whether you’re 25 and athletic or 55 and haven’t worked out since high school, you can walk in and begin training on day one. The art scales to you, not the other way around.

But here’s the deeper problem with waiting.

If you spend months at the gym prepping for Systema, conventional training will actually work against you. Traditional fitness routines build rigidity, tension, and the kind of muscular tightness that Systema has to spend extra time undoing. You’d be building habits that slow your progress.

Systema’s warm-ups and drills aren’t filler — every single one feeds directly into your self-defense skill. Your cardio improves. Your connective tissue strengthens. Your range of motion expands. You learn to breathe under pressure. And all of it happens at the same time you’re becoming more capable of protecting yourself.

One of our longtime students lost 60 pounds after starting Systema. He didn’t wait until he was thin enough to train — he trained, and the transformation followed.

The bottom line: your fitness level is not a prerequisite. It’s a result.

If you’ve been putting off trying Systema because you’re not in good enough shape, consider this your sign. Come as you are. We’ll meet you there.
